NEW Earswick Musicals' autumn show will be Fiddler On The Roof, in response to public demand.

"We performed this show seven years ago and we've constantly been asked to perform it again," says chairman Steve Tearle. "With a revival on Broadway and a West End revival planned, we thought now is the perfect time to perform this heartfelt piece of theatre. Add re-imagined sets and the beautiful use of moving theatre projections, and it's going to be an amazing night at the theatre."

The NEM show will run from November 9 to 12 at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, bringing alive once more such songs As If I Were A Rich Man, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Tradition, Sunrise, Sunset, Miracle Of Miracles and Far From The Land I Love.

"To launch the production, we'll be holding an open night on July 11 at 7.30pm in New Earswick Folk Hall, where you'll be able to pick up your audition pieces if you want one of the principal parts and to get to know the story," says Steve.

"There'll be no auditions for the ensemble casting if you've performed with New Earswick Musicals in the past two years. As we expect a lot of people will want to be a part of this experience, please register on July 11, when we're looking forward to seeing you there."

Fiddler On The Roof, featuring music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein, is set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in 1905 and is based on Tevye And His Daughters (or Tevye The Dairyman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem.

"The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions when outside influences encroach on the family's lives," says Steve.

"He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love, not faith, and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village."

Tickets for the 7.30pm evening shows and 2.30pm Saturday matinee are on sale at £18, concessions £16, children £12, at josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk/book/853 or on 01904 501935.
