YORK St John Musical Production Society will present The Witches Of Eastwick at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from Thursday to Saturday.

Written by John Dempsey, with music by Dana P Rowe and lyrics by Dempsey, this American musical from 2000 is an enchanting tale of how the sleepy, quaint town of Eastwick is turned upside down by the arrival of a mysterious stranger.

Three beautiful, bewitching women fall under the charming spell of the devilish Mr Van Horn, who sends the townsfolk into a frenzy of gossip and lies. Magic and mayhem ensue in a story of love, lust, murder, betrayal and a dance with the devil.

"York St John Musical Production Society are one of the biggest and longest-running societies at the university and are in their 51st year," says publicist Phoebe Penfold. "This show has been a delight for the cast, crew and backstage team to work on from the very beginning. We're lucky to have such a talented and committed cast and it promises to be one hell of a musical."

Principal roles will go to Sven Kluever as Darryl Van Horn; Hannah Lambell as Alexandra Spofford; Rachel Rogers as Jane Smart; Gemma Kean, Sukie Rougmount; Siobhan Allen, Felicia Gabriel; Edna Sulejmanovic, Jennifer Gabriel; Wayne Dawson, Michael Spofford; Stephen Mitchell, Clyde Gabriel; Dan Breeze, Fidel, and Jessica Dale, Little Girl.

In the ensemble will be: Abi Sears; Christine Muller; Emilie Armitage; Emily Burt; Jess Maynard; Karolina Slawska; Laura Castle; Marina Bonilla; Sinead White and Rachel Wilson.

Looking forward to this week's shows, director James Wardlaw says: "After choosing this musical in early June last year, we've had a fantastic rollercoaster ride. Since casting, we've been partaking in two rehearsals a week while we all do a full-time degree. Not forgetting the band recruitment, advertising and technical side of the show.

"It's been an incredible experience to direct such a challenging show, with such a committed and dedicated cast. The story line is incredible with the right balance of charismatic darkness and comedy. We hope to see you there."

Tickets for the 7.30pm evening shows and 2.30pm Saturday matinee cost £12, concessions £10, York St John students £8, and reservations are available from Phoebe Penfold on 07769 698570 or by emailing phoebe.penfold@yorksj.ac.uk.

"We also operate a cash-on-the-door ticket collection service, half an hour before each performance starts," says Phoebe.
