THE Kinks' musical, Sunny Afternoon, is on its way to the Grand Opera House in York, but please don't grow tired of waiting, even if the West End hit does not arrive here until February 2017.

Premiered at London's Hampstead Theatre, the show transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre in October 2014, where it is booking into a second year. Now Sonia Friedman Productions and the Ambassador Theatre Group are to launch a national tour that will open at the Manchester Opera in August 2016. The York dates will be February 21 to 25 the following year.

Winner of four awards at the 2015 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and the Outstanding Achievement in Music for Ray Davies, Sunny Afternoon features such Kinks songs as You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola as it tells the story of the early life of Davies and the rise to stardom of his band from Muswell Hill, North London.

The Kinks exploded on to the 1960s music scene with a raw, energetic new sound, but how did that happen and what happened next? Against the backdrop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 1950s and riotous Sixties, Edward Hall's production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of this iconic band.

Sunny Afternoon features music and lyrics by Ray Davies with a book by Joe Penhall from an original story by Davies, choreography by Adam Cooper and design by Miriam Buether. Tickets for York are on sale on 0844 871 3024 or at atgtickets.com/york
