YORK company Upstage Centre Youth Theatre is teaming up with two very different venues in the city this weekend to share stories of York's forgotten youth.

Where I’m Stood, a "cutting-edge documentary theatre experience" based on the true stories of young people from York, will be performed at York Explore Library and Learning Centre, on Museum Street, and York Boxing Club, in Walmgate, as well as at Upstage’s home venue of 41 Monkgate.

Sarah Nicholson, from City of York Council Youth Services, says: “It's so excellent that the local authority is able to support such brilliant opportunity for grassroots arts organisations like Upstage to engage with young people in the city.

"We've been behind this project from day one and are proud to see it come to such exciting fruition. I think the performances at York Explore and the Boxing Club will be a great chance for a whole range of young people to see the play that they inspired.”

The devised play has drawn on many stories and interviews collected by researchers and artists at Upstage Centre Youth Theatre, as executive producer Joshua Goodman explains. "We've worked hard to engage with the most diverse possible range of young people in the city," he says. "We wanted their stories of life growing up in York – warts and all – and the results have been staggering. I really hope loads of young people come and see the show and share with us their opinions on how well it reflects life as they know it.”

Where I'm Stood is a blend of fictional and real stories, and its seven young actors – Amber Coulson, Elizabeth Whynes, Heidi Foss, Jessica West, Liam Kavanagh-Allen, Naomi Jeffries and Ruth Sparkes – will deliver lines infused with real words from young people who contributed to the research. Director Matt Harper says: "We’re not just touring to these unusual venues for the fun of it. We wanted the play to take place in spaces young people already identify as theirs. On the one hand, there’s the library, which reflects one side of life for teenagers in the city; on the other hand, there’s the boxing club, which has a very different vibe. The hope is that in each venue we’ll play to an audience of regulars to that space. That’s really exciting.”

Where I’m Stood will be performed at Upstage Centre Youth Theatre, 41 Monkgate, York, tomorrow at 7.30pm; York Explore Library and Learning Centre, Museum Street, Saturday, 8pm, and York Boxing Club, The Maltings, Walmgate, Sunday, 5pm.
