SCRIPT Factor, the short-play competition run by the York branch of Script Yorkshire in support of new writing, theatre and the arts, will return for a new season at The Basement, City Screen, on September 21.

"Details of how you can submit a script will be announced shortly, along with more exciting York branch news," says publicist Beryl Nairn.

The 2015 Script Factor Final at Friargate Theatre, York, has been won by James Welford, who took home the trophy for his darkly comic, creepy, celebrity-stalking saga, Dinner Date. Claire Morley's heart-wrenching, time-shifting piece, The Absolute, was the runner-up.

Taking part too in the July 21 final were Ann Crossley, Rachel Price and João Rei Villar, with each 15-minute piece being presented as rehearsed readings by York Settlement Community Players actors. The winner was chosen by audience votes.

"A tremendously impressive and varied array of scripts was on offer, responding to the theme of Relativity," says Beryl. "Congratulations to all the 2015 finalists and, in particular, to James and his cast, Hazel Creaghan and Katy Welford. It was a superb event, hosted in inimitable style by York poet Antony Dunn."

The final was a time for a farewell too: Becky Thomson, Script Yorkshire's York branch co-ordinator, announced she would be stepping down after two years at the helm to focus on her own script-writing. "Becky has been a wonderful champion of the York branch and will be greatly missed," says Beryl.
