NEW Earswick Musicals have won the rights to perform the York premiere of Sunset Boulevard, the 1993 Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton musical based on Billy Wilder's 1950 Hollywood film.

Steve Tearle's production will star New Earswick stalwart Ann McCready in the role of Norma Desmond, former star of the silent silver screen, at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from November 17 to 21.

Sunset Boulevard revolves around young screenwriter Joe Gillis accidentally crossing the path of ageing, faded star Norma, who sees in him an opportunity to make her movie comeback.

The musical score includes As If We Never Said Goodbye, With One Look, Sunset Boulevard and The Perfect Year, and Ann will be joining the likes of Petula Clark, Elaine Paige and Glenn Close in playing the lead role.

An introductory night and cast recruitment drive will be held at New Earswick Folk Hall on Monday, hosted by the director at 7.30pm. "We're looking to bring together a cast that will engage and create a sense of excitement," says Steve. "I want to see you for this fantastic production, so please come down to our open night to find out more about this amazing show and to register your interest.

"You'll have a chance to go through some of the audition pieces and meet the team. I'll talk you through the story, the set and this exciting project. Musical director Mike Thompson will talk you through the music selection of his favourite Lloyd Webber musical later on."

Auditions will take place on June 18 at the folk hall at set times to be confirmed after the open day. "It's all about you being the character you want to be, so please bring some inspiration," advises Steve.

Publicist Jane Holiday echoes the director's enthusiasm and urges participation in the open day and auditions. "Are you ready to take on this amazing production and support our amazing team? I’m sure you are; you know you are. The search is now on; we're opening our door to find the perfect person for each role.”

Tickets for the 7.30pm evening performances and 2.30pm Saturday matinee in November will go on sale on July 1 at newearswickmusicalsociety.co.uk or on 07759 260852.
