SPRING has sprung and nowhere is this more apparent than at Upstage Centre Youth Theatre in York, where a talented young cast invite you to watch two very different takes on our sunny countryside in their double-bill production of Babe The Sheep Pig and Animal Farm from tomorrow to Sunday.

From best-selling book to blockbuster movie, now Dick King-Smith’s beloved modern classic Babe The Sheep Pig is brought to the stage in the first act.

“Prepare to have a smile on your face as Upstage’s Junior Team delight you with their heart-warming story of friendship, trying to fit in and following your dreams,” says Upstage co-artistic director Joshua Goodman.

Country matters take a nasty turn in the second half when the Senior Team re-imagine George Orwell’s ground-breaking and savage critique of Stalinism in Animal Farm. The chilling consequences of the animals’ rebellion against their cruel masters is played out against a backdrop of physical theatre.

“This double bill really shows the talent and diversity within our youth theatre and within York,” says co-artistic director Matt Harper. “It’s not often you’d get to see a storytelling piece by under-14s complemented by a sophisticated piece of political theatre, but at Upstage it works because originality is at the heart of what we make with our members.”

Evening performances start at 7.30pm tomorrow and Saturday; matinees at 2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets cost £12 or £10 online at upstagecentre.org.uk
