VIENNA Festival Ballet will hold an Introduction to Ballet workshop before the 5pm performance of Sleeping Beauty on Saturday, April 25, at 2pm.

“We like to offer children the chance to see how a professional ballet company go about their daily routine through a short, informal workshop,” says company founder Peter Mallek.

“The children, aged eight upwards, will watch and learn how dancers prepare themselves and warm their muscles before the performance, and they will see how the exercises at the barre build to the dazzling displays of virtuosity seen in the performance.”

After the warm-up, a short talk will explain the origins of ballet and the story of Sleeping Beauty.

Some costumes and pointe shoes will be shown, letting the children gain a feel for the ballet, and they can then ask questions and even try a shoulder lift or a pirouette with the dancers.

Workshop places cost £11.90 on 0844 871 3024 or at atgtickets.com/york; places are restricted to 30.
