WORDPLAY rather than swordplay will be the weapon of choice when poets battle it out in the Say Owt Slam #3 at The Basement, City Screen, York, on Sunday at 7.30pm.

This evening of the spectacular spoken word will be hosted by York poets Henry Raby – the one who wears band T-shirts – and Stu Freestone – the one with cool hair – as poets are allocated three minutes each to wow the audience. The winner will be crowned Say Owt Slam champ, winning a £30 cash prize.

Two guest poets, Jess Green and Jenn Hart, will be performing too.

“Jess is a Leicester poet renowned for her honest and raw spoken word,” says compere Henry.

“She’s performed across the country, including Glastonbury, Bestival, Secret Garden Party and Latitude and her video of Dear Mr Gove went viral, attracting over 290,000 YouTube hits. She’s dead good.

“Jenn is a Bristol feminist punk, ferret owner, zine-maker, DIY event promoter and Gryffindor wizard. Her poetry is about life, love, politics, patches and environmentalism. She’s well good.”

In addition to the slam night, Jess Green will lead a writing workshop from 5pm to 6pm at The Basement on how to structure poems and find your own voice.
