YORK Footlights Theatre is rehearsing an exciting new project after raising £1,200 in aid of Leeds Heart Units and Mia’s Memory from last year’s debut production of Robin Hood.

Now company founders Jes Beswick and Olivia Jayne Newton are to present Crossed Swords, actor-musician Olivia’s new play based on the little-told but true story of pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two women who lived remarkable lives.

Olivia’s script is both a poignant and witty dramatisation and will be brought to life by a cast of actors and folk musicians in an April 14 to 18 run at the Upstage Centre Theatre, 41 Monkgate, York.

“The show features live music, real sea shanties, and we’ll also be combining theatre with recorded media, using film to highlight the more shadowy, mysterious parts of the characters’ lives,” says Olivia.

“After the success of Robin Hood, we decided to continue to support a worthy cause through our art and will be donating a percentage of ticket sales to York Mind, whom we’re also working alongside to provide opportunities for young people affected my mental health issues,” says Jez.

Next on the horizon will be filming days in Whitby harbour, taking place aboard the replica of the Endeavour in March.
