MANY a jazz musician would argue that their preferred style of music receives a small amount of radio air time, with many mainstream stations being guilty of complete neglect.

With the radio having such an influence, it would be great to see a change. I’m pleased to announce that as well as reading Jazz Notes and consulting the listings website jazzinyork.com, you can now listen to BBC Radio York at 3.45pm every Monday to hear trumpeter Ian Chalk discuss jazz in North Yorkshire and play relevant tracks. His first session this week was informative and entertaining.

There are two great jazz vocalists in town this evening. Kate Peters and Jenny Smith are sometimes found performing together in the Al Morrison Blues Experience and the Charity Dreamgirls. This evening, Ms Peters will be joining the Andy Cholerton Trio at the Red Lion Hotel in Poppleton from 8.30pm, while Ms Smith will be performing in a duo format from 7pm at The Pavilion Hotel, Fulford Road.

Always popular in York, there will be two further opportunities to hear Kate this week. The first is at Kennedy’s Bar, Little Stonegate from 1pm on Sundaym, followed by her regular performance with a quartet at The Phoenix Inn, George Street from 8.30pm on Monday. Named after their resident venue, The Firebird Quartet will also be performing at The Phoenix on Sunday from 8pm while the popular Wednesday evening jam session begins at 8.30pm.

Your former scribe and review contributor, Ron Burnett, brings his band, Four in a Bar, to The Victoria Vaults, Nunnery Lane from 8.30pm on Tuesday. He is joined by three fine musicians including Greg Wadman on trumpet. Expect swinging standards and Dixieland classics.

The home of Dixieland and swing in the area in Boston Spa Jazz club which welcomes a visit this week from the Andy Henderson Swingtet. They will be performing in the style of the great 1940s and 1950s small combos with a repertoire of standards made popular by the big bands of that era.

Slightly further afield this week, the Zoe Gilby Quartet will be performing at Wakefield Jazz Club on Friday evening. Hailing from the north east, Zoe and her excellent band will play original music from their album, Twelve Stories.

Seven Jazz Club in the Chapel Allerton area of Leeds is lucky enough to have a truly world-class trio performing this evening with pianist John Taylor, saxophonist Julian Siegel and vocalists Diana Torto playing a selection of material including arrangements of Paul McCartney’s compositions. Music starts at 8pm.

Saxophonist Rob McGrath will be guesting with the Mike Gordon Trio at Scarborough Jazz Club on Wednesday evening. McGrath plays regularly in small and big bands in the area and is has great ability as a soloist and ensemble player. The clubs home is at The Cask Inn and music begins at 8.45pm.
