TOP HAT, the all-singing, all-dancing musical that was such a hit at Leeds Grand Theatre in December 2011, is to return there from Tuesday to January 11.

Winner of three Olivier Awards – Best New Musical, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design – and the Evening Standard Award for Best Night Out, the show celebrates the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood and the tap-dancing magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Packed with Irving Berlin’s greatest hits, such as Cheek To Cheek, White Tie And Tails, Let’s Face The Music And Dance, Puttin’ On The Ritz and Top Hat, it tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers, who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont .

The show features a cast of 29, led by Alan Burkitt as Jerry Travers and Charlotte Gooch as DaleTremont, after playing Penny in Dirty Dancing at the Leeds theatre. They will be joined by 11 musicians for a show that adds ten Berlin numbers to the five that featured in the Fred and Ginger movie.

Burkitt is a former winner of the All England Tap Dancer of the Year award and was a member of the original West End cast of Top Hat at the Aldwych Theatre, London, where he understudied the lead role for both Tom Chambers and Gavin Lee. Chambers appeared in Leeds too, playing opposite Summer Strallen, in 2011.

The original film premiered at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City, where it broke all box office records in 1935. It was nominated for four Academy Awards and was the most successful picture of the nine movies Astaire and Rogers made together.

The musical is directed by Matthew White and choreographed by Bill Deamer, with set designs by Hildegard Bechtler, costume designs by Jon Morrell, lighting design by Peter Mumford, sound by Gareth Owen, new orchestrations by Chris Walker and musical supervision by Richard Balcombe.

“Top Hat is an uplifting romantic comedy celebrating 1930s song, style and romance,” says Ian Sime, Leeds Grand Theatre's general manager. “With more than 200 beautiful costumes, breathtaking dance and a love story that will set the pulse racing, we’re sure the Yorkshire audiences will love this very special Christmas treat.”
