SPRING Awakening is unlike any other musical, with sex, rebellion and some killer songs on the cards. Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, the show is a bold choice for York Stage Musicals, but the young cast steps up to the mark, delivering an evocative and engaging show.

With a number of very daring scenes, it is great to see youth theatre tackling taboo subjects and serious themes, alongside fantastic performances of the show’s rock tunes.

Tracing the lives of a group of school friends on the road to growing up, the rock musical delves into the inner thoughts of the youngsters as they battle with knowledge that they’re not quite ready for. Wendla and Melchior discover love and its consequences, while their friends struggle with suicide, sexuality and abuse.

There are no cheesy tunes or obvious stereotypes, only honest characters and emotive songs, and it feels like the perfect choice for a young theatre group: relevant and honest.

As Wendla, Megan Forman’s naivety is totally convincing, while Ben Williams's Melchior is bold, blunt and suitably moody. Lee West’s portrayal of Moritz is terrifyingly tragic, with West giving a really striking performance.

Some microphone failures on Thursday night left a number of performances slightly flat, which was disappointing as the energy and passion was clearly present. Despite this setback, the fantastically choreographed and performed ensemble pieces boost the energy and the volume of the production. Totally F***** is the show-stopper.

Modern updates bring the story into the 21dt century while the sophisticated lighting design adds a professional finish.

YSM have set the bar high for more serious subject matters, delivering a slick, emotional show, and exploring themes which are too often shied away from. A great production, beautifully executed by a talented cast.
