YORK Light Youth’s biggest and most spectacular production to date opens tomorrow for ten performances of Boublil and Schonberg’s Les Miserables: School Edition at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York.

One hundred hopefuls auditioned for the musical in July and a cast of 56 was selected by the creative team of director John Hall and musical director Mike Thompson.

“This epic story of broken dreams, passion and redemption against the backdrop of the French nation in the grip of revolution has excited audiences across the world for 29 years and our production will not disappoint,” says John. “It will be the most expensive production the company has done so far.”

The iconic role of Jean Valjean will be shared by Scott Goncalves and Christian Mortimer. Other roles will be played by Ria Williams, Naomi Halliday, Hannah Richardson, Robert Fisher, Harry Gibb, Sam Rippon, Grant Langworthy, Sam Lightfoot-Loftus and Kelly Stocker.

“Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Miserables packs an emotional wallop that continues to thrill audiences all over the world,” says John. “Now is your chance to see it in York with a supremely talented cast of young performers.”

Les Miserables runs from tomorrow until November 8 with evening performances at 7.30pm and a 2.30pm matinee on each Saturday. Tickets are available in person from the York Theatre Royal box office, by phone on 01904 623568 and online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

“They’re selling fast, so don’t delay,” advises John.
