LEEDS Grand Theatre will host a one-off First World War exhibition at its annual Heritage Open Day on September 14.
Developed in partnership with the University of Leeds and West Yorkshire Archive Service, Theatres At War has been curated by two university students to mark the centenary of the outbreak of war.
Items on show in the stalls and dress circle bars will include those from Leeds Grand Theatre’s archive collection, alongside pieces from the Yorkshire Post and photographs and letters loaned by family members of past Leeds Grand employees.
Theatres At War explores and commemorates the lives and stories of those who worked and performing at the Grand throughout the First World War. From the employees who bravely enlisted, through to the performances, benefits and lectures that promoted patriotism and lifted the audience’s spirits, the Grand played a significant role in Leeds during this period. Photographs, playbills, programmes and more besides will contribute to revealing forgotten stories for the first time.
The Heritage Open Day will run from10.30am to 4pm and is free of charge; last entry at 3.30pm.
