JORVIK Gilbert and Sullivan Company will present Iolanthe at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from September 18 to 20.

The production will be directed by Lucy Thomson-Smith, who joins the company fresh from directing Georges Bizet's Carmen as part of York Opera’s Tales Of Love show at the York Guildhall in June.

"I'm delighted to have this opportunity and look forward to building on the Jorvik company’s previous success by creating a wonderful and enjoyable show," she says.

Written at the height of Gilbert and Sullivan's satirical powers, Iolanthe is regarded by many as their best collaboration.

G&S's "fairy opera" involves the House of Lords and the political system coming in for criticism when it is suggested the peerage should no longer be hereditary, but obtainable by "competitive examination". First performed in 1882, this anarchic comedy is still relevant today, showing how far we have come in 130 years or maybe not.

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Society last played the Rowntree theatre in September 2013 when staging Ruddigiore. Tickets for next month's 7.30pm shows and 2.30pm Saturday matinee cost £12, concessions £10, under 16s free, on 01904 623568, online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or via email to tickets@jorvikgsc.org.uk
