THE Russian State Ballet and Opera House will present Giuseppe Verdi's 19th century opera Rigoletto at York Barbican on Sunday, February 15 next year.

Singing in Italian, to the accompaniment of English subtitles, the cast will be joined by an orchestra of more than 30 musicians for Verdi's three-act opera, a tragic tale of misunderstanding, revenge and sacrifice, set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s’amuse.

Rigoletto revolves around hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto, his beautiful daughter, Gilda, who he has kept secret from the Court, and the Duke of Mantua, the nobleman he serves.

Ultimately, a curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father.

Tickets for Rigoletto are on sale at £22 to £30 on 0844 854 2757 or at yorkbarbican.co.uk or in person from the Barbican box office, 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.
