BUDDING writers, aged 18 to 35, are invited to a free scriptwriting workshop at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, on August 16 from 2pm to 5pm.

The three-hour session will be run by artistic director Chris Monks and associate director Henry Bell and will give a taster of the SJT’s Write Stuff 2 course, whose new term will begin in September under the tutelage of OutReach Creative Writing teacher Ali Watt. Ali will be present at next weekend’s workshop too.

Designed for younger adult writers, the workshop will take an innovative and friendly approach to scriptwriting through writing activities and exercises and lively discussions. No preparation or previous writing experience is needed; just bring a pen, paper and a desire to explore storytelling in script form.

The Scarborough theatre has a “massive commitment” to developing and giving a platform to new writing, says Chris Monks.

“Whether you’ve written for years or are completely new to it, the workshop aims to give anyone between the ages of 18 and 35 the chance to try out scriptwriting in a professionally run, supportive environment. The afternoon’s activities will be friendly and stimulating and, as a taster for the new script writing course, the hope is that this could be the launch of a whole new generation of emerging writers.”

Although places are free, they must be booked in advance on 01723 370541.
