ESK Valley Theatre’s tenth anniversary August production at the Robinson Institute, Glaisdale, near Whitby, will be Willy Russell’s northern comedy One For The Road.

From the writer of Shirley Valentine, Blood Brothers and Educating Rita comes the 1980s’ tale of Dennis and Pauline Cain, as they sit in the lounge of their new middle-class dormer bungalow on the fictional Castlehills housing estate.

Their friends Roger and Jane arrive to celebrate Dennis’ birthday, but as they await the arrival of his parents, Dennis is having something of a mid-life crisis and wants to escape. Will he ever leave Castlehills and will his parents ever find their way in?

Directed by company co-founder Mark Stratton, One For The Road will run from August 7 to 30 with a post-show talk-back with the director and cast on August 19. What’s more, whether or not the parents ever arrive, This production marks at least a doubling in size of cast for Esk Valley Theatre, a company long associated with two-handers.

The performances will be 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday, plus 2.30pm on August 9, 14, 16, 21 and 28.

Tickets cost £12.50, concessions £11.50, on 01947 897587.
