FRIENDSHIP. Gossip. Poison. Murder! Girls have all the fun in a brand spankin’ new musical from country queen Dolly Parton.

Ambassador Theatre Group is bringing the British premiere tour of 9 To 5: The Musical to the Grand Opera House, York, from February 4 to 9.

Dolly Parton says: “I’m so excited that 9 To 5: The Musical is touring Britain. I’m hoping you have as much fun watching it as I had writing the music for it. 9 To 5: The Musical is perfect for anyone that’s ever wanted to string up their boss, which is almost all of us.”

Howard Panter, Ambassador Theatre Group’s joint chief executive, is thrilled to be touring Parton’s musical. “A hugely entertaining film has been turned in to a musical rollercoaster of delight,” he says. “Dolly Parton is a true global icon and this sharp, witty musical adventure is one of the most exciting new musicals to be hitting the UK stage.”

Parton’s musical comedy is based on Colin Higgins’s 1980 movie Nine To Five, in which Dolly starred as Doralee Rhodes. Written by Patricia Resnick with music and lyrics by Dolly, it centres on three office workers, Violet, Judy and Doralee, who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, hypocritical bigot of a boss, Franklin J Hart Jr, by conspiring to take control of the company.

In doing so, they learn there is nothing they cannot do.

The show, with its story of teaming up and taking care of business, is described as “outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, as well as feisty, fun and oh so fabulous”. Inevitably it features the hit title song 9 To 5 in a Tony and Grammy-nominated score of 18 original Parton numbers, including songs from her most recent albums, Backwoods Barbie and Better Day.

Directed by Jeff Calhoun, the touring production stars Jackie Clune as Violet, Natalie Casey as Judy, Amy Lennox as Doralee, Mark Moraghan as Franklin J Hart Jr and Bonnie Langford as Hart’s besotted PA, Roz.

Tickets for the 7.30pm evening performances and 2.30pm Wednesday and Saturday matinees can be booked on 0844 871 3024 or online at atgtickets.com/york
