Following the main ceremony, hosted by Joanna Lumley, Bowman will then front a new programme in which she will take viewers backstage for interviews with the winners and give them a glimpse at unseen behind the scenes moments.

It will be broadcast from 11pm on Bafta’s Twitter account for fans across the world to see.

Amanda Berry OBE, chief executive of Bafta, said: “We are delighted to be working with Edith and Dermot, and to extend the invite to people around the world to join us to celebrate the awards.

“We’re excited to reach new audiences and share the experience through all of our channels.”

Bafta has also announced that red carpet highlights, winner interviews and photographs will be shared as part of a package on its social networks including its Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram pages.

Fantastical thriller The Shape Of Water leads the race for the Bafta awards with 12 nods at this year’s ceremony, while British actors Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya and Jamie Bell will compete with US star Timothee Chalamet for the leading actor gong.

British actress Sally Hawkins, who stars in The Shape Of Water, is facing Saoirse Ronan, Annette Bening, Frances McDormand and Margot Robbie in the leading actress category.

The EE British Academy Film Awards airs at 9pm on Sunday on BBC One.
