ELECTION! ELECTION! ELECTION!

Even for those of us who do (or at least try to) live beneath that current affairs rock, I think it is safe to say by now the whole nation is fully aware that today is officially General Election day.

And with that trip to the polling station will be a sense of great relief - marking the end (or almost) of what has become an inescapable 'battle'.

So say goodbye to those campaigns that started as prematurely as the putting up of lights at department stores for Christmas.

But before we move on altogether it would seem a shame not to reflect on the fashion, colours and styles of the political crusaders so far.

This year the fashion stakes have been raised with Tweed, wax-jacket and flat-cap'ped' Farage alongside bold and bright skirt-suited Sturgeon, inoffensive dress-and-jacket combo clad Wood and light-coloured, soft-textured fabric wearing, 'benecklaced' Bennett.

And despite being familiar with the red, blue and yellow from the main political party representatives, Ed, Cameron and Clegg have had their fair share of dress-up.

Just like us they have all at one stage or another donned the likes of catchy orange or yellow high vis jackets or braved head gear with the addition of a hard-hat.

If novelty isn't your 'thing', stay savvy and super professional with a flattering tailored jacket from Oasis at £40.

With rolled up sleeves and a pinched in waist, this power dressing piece comes in electric blue (no political affiliation required) as well as yellow, black and grey.

Match with a simple cami, chinos and a statement necklace for a suitably smart office look.

For something more playful and less politically suggestive, head to New Look for their simple grey tunic dress at £17.99.

This short-sleeved, lightweight jersey mini dress has a ribbed texture with black trim around the neck and arms.

It's quite short to tights are an almost must on the job.

Add simple heels and even a statement blazer to bring it to life.
