Matt Smith says young fans of 'Doctor Who' should be given "more credit" for understanding the complex storylines of the BBC One series, and believes the show would be pointless if it was "too easy" to comprehend.

Matt Smith thinks 'Doctor Who' would be pointless if it was "too easy" to understand.

The 30-year-old actor - who portrays the titular Time Lord in the BBC One sci-fi series - doesn't think the programme is too difficult to comprehend for younger viewers, who he says "pay more attention" to the show's complex storylines than adults and as a result believes kids should be given "more credit".

He said: "Children are always going to engage with the story in a slightly different way to adults, but I tell you this, I bet you they pay more attention.

"What are we meant to do? Just dumb everything down? The science is mad and complicated and brilliant. It's 'Doctor Who! If it's too easy, what's the point? I think we have to give children more credit."

Despite the often complicated nature of the plotlines, Matt has remained tight-lipped about the goings on in forthcoming episodes, simply stating they will involve explosions, new destinations and new characters.

Summarising the upcoming shows, he added to the Radio Times magazine: "A load of new places to explode things, new places to visit and people we may or may not have seen before."

'Doctor Who' returns to BBC One this Saturday at 6:15pm.
