The highly anticipated 50th anniversary special of 'Doctor Who' will be screened in cinemas across Britain at the same time as it airs on TV in November.

The 50th anniversary episode of 'Doctor Who' will be shown in cinemas.

BBC bosses are planning to screen the sci-fi drama's highly anticipated feature-length anniversary special - which will be filmed in 3D - in cinemas across Britain and in several other countries at the same time as it airs on TV in November.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Filming for the anniversary episode starts in two weeks and there is a real buzz about it, especially because it will be in 3D.

"It is being planned as a TV movie to mark 50 years of the show. It will be the highlight of the celebrations. The episode has been written but we don't really know yet whether it will be an hour, 75 minutes or 90 minutes."

The celebratory episode was written by executive producer Steven Moffat, who recently revealed the script was "under lock and key".

Speaking at the launch of the new series last week, he said: "One length I've gone to which is a really good security measure - I make sure I don't get a script, because I will lose it. I forbid people to hand me one. It's on my computer under lock and key."

As well as the ambitious 3D episode - which will star Matt Smith as the titular Time Lord and Jenna-Louise Coleman as new assistant Clara Oswald - BBC bosses have also commissioned a one-off drama about the creation of 'Doctor Who' to celebrate the show's 50th year.

'An Adventure in Space and Time' has been written by Mark Gatiss - who has penned several episodes of 'Doctor Who' since it returned to screens in 2005 - and will star Reece Shearsmith as Second Doctor Patrick Troughton and David Bradley as the first incarnation of the Time Lord.
