Frankie Rose, Interstellar (Memphis Industries) ***

FRANKIE Rose has bloomed again. After time served in Brooklyn’s garage rock scene with Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls and Crystal, she released the girl-pop mantras of the Frankie Rose And The Outs album in 2010.

Out went The Outs for solo album number two, as she wanted her next record to be “totally different”. Working with producer Le Chev has done the trick, she says, introducing her to “making sounds that I wouldn’t know how to make”. Indie pop has stepped aside for shoe-gazing reverb, gossamer, dreamy synth pop and the soft cushion of layered, shimmering vocal harmonies piled high in the Eighties fashion.

She sails surprisingly close to Enya on Pair Of Wings, although she no doubt would prefer comparisons with the Cocteau Twins. It is all as lovely as the song title Apples For The Sun suggests it should be.

• Frankie Rose plays Leeds Brudenell Social Club on July 24.
