WHEN Piney Gir, alias Angela Penhaligon from London via Kansas, played Fibbers one August night in 2007, she was dressed up real purdy for her Country Roadshow, when twang was her thang.
She has a habit of changing styles, however, and Geronimo! finds her relocating her retro affections in the Sixties’ pop of The Byrds, Phil Spector, The Beach Boys and Sgt. Pepper’s brass.
She still does sweet and sour in songs of heartbreak, friendships and new love, and is equally at home as Eilen Jewell and Imelda May with rockabilly. Although Geronimo! loses its exclamation-mark excitement in the middle, It’s Our Time and Say Goodbye see it out in fine style, the closer being an upbeat funeral march replete with irresistible mariachi trumpets.
