JIM Noir releases his self-proclaimed masterpiece, Finnish Line, on My Dad Recordings and if he has been listening to his dad’s records, more than likely his ears have been busy with The Beatles, solo McCartney, a slice of Lennon, a little Harrison, a dollop of Starr quirkiness and even The Rutles.

That might suggest a Liverpool record, but Noir made it down the East Lancs Road in a Manchester mill. Alcohol, life, death, aliens, are in Noir’s thoughts, as is Manchester, after a “slightly hard point” in his life where he cut off from music, cut out booze and went travelling. Noir by name and noir by subject matter, nevertheless Finnish Line is gloriously uplifting: he loves vintage synths and analogue gear, but above all he loves fuzzy guitars, piled-up harmonies and cosmic flurries.

Out From Within and Stone Cold Room are particularly Fab Four, and Noir acknowledges: “I’m not trying to consciously channel The Beatles; it just happens that I do have a lot of the instruments they used,” he says. “What’s not to like?” What indeed. Formidably fab.
