IN THE late 80s this band was a leading light in the Madchester movement.

Then in 1994 Mute Records pulled the rug and that was that. Or so it seemed, because the Inspirals have released the first album of new material in 20 years. No prizes for guessing what it sounds like.

Clint Boon’s swirling Telstar organ remains the trademark and while singer Tom Hingley has gone AWOL, you wouldn’t know it, thanks to returning original vocalist Stephen Holt.

It’s a strange experience listening to songs that sound so familiar, but remain so fresh.

Spitfire and Hey Now, for example, could quite easily have made the short list for Life. But that was two decades ago and while Holt croons ‘This is our Time’ on one of the latter tracks, it isn’t of course; a new generation has taken over.

That said, and despite nothing here to match classics such as She Comes In the Fall and Many Happy Returns, when it comes to nostalgic psychedelia Inspiral Carpets still show this is how it feels.
