YOU have to give James Yorkston time. It's always been that way and remains so on his eighth studio album. A cursory listen might suggest that Yorkston, with his half-spoken vocals and gently meandering songs, lost his way on the musical flatlands years ago.
No so – especially on this lovely collection of songs with support from KT Tunstall and The Pictish Trail. The production by Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor is warm and layered, opening up these personal short-story songs and elevating them to a higher level. Opener Fellow Man is a typical low-key delight, while Guy Fawkes' Signature – which was said to have been affected by torture – works beautifully.
Sleep On is almost upbeat, certainly the most lively Yorkston has been in a while, while last track You & Your Sister – the only cover here – brings matters to a wry, lyrical end. This is the most complete James Yorkston album to date and one that should bring him more attention. Give this man a try: you may well be surprised.
