THE usage of salty language is neither big nor clever, yet its proliferation into main stream pop music has reached epidemic proportions.

There are certain acts which shouldn’t overstep that all important watermark. Mariah Carey is one of them. Even though the pop princess doesn’t mutter any profanities personally, her guest artist rappers do, and to the detriment of the Me, I Am Mariah project.

The single #Beautiful is actually a very decent summer duet, vandalised by Miguel’s rap that is hardly worthy of a low-rating sailor on shore leave.

Moreover, a very slight edit of It’s A Wrap featuring Mary J Blige would elevate the track from the gutter to the heavens, where it belongs.

Ms Carey is the executive producer of the set, so she has no one else to blame. But this language will neither attract a streetwise audience nor endear an established fan base who may decide to pass on this one, and thereby be deprived of the superlative ballad Cry and an awesome understated cover of George Michael’s One More Try, which are more in keeping with the Carey legacy.
