TRIBAL is a great title and bang on the money as regards to describing the contents of Imelda May’s superlative fourth album. Her tribe is rockabilly, good old fashioned no-nonsense bar-room rock’n’roll.
May’s band is one of the hottest boogie woogie acts in the business, on a par, but on a smaller scale, with Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Demanding to be played loud, Tribal is an impressive and highly enjoyable collection of hot crowd pleasers, honed by master musicians of their genre. Perhaps unintentionally, but due to the nature of narrative songs such as Wild Women, Gypsy In Me and the sensational Hellfire Club, the core of a decent West End musical could be sourced from this collection.
Imelda May is proving to be a versatile, bankable and highly talented act, deserving to be appreciated internationally as well as in her native Ireland.
Imelda May will play Leeds O2 Academy on November 20. Tickets go on sale at 10am tomorrow on 0844 811 0051 or at gigsandtours.com
