SHOULD you be wondering, a ‘mendicant’ is defined as someone who lives by asking people for food or money.

That would not seem to apply to Messrs Joe Pernice, of the Scud Mountain Boys and Pernice Brothers, Norman Blake, of Teenage Fanclub, and drummer-to-hire Mike Belitsky.

Never mind the name, come on feel the music of The New Mendicants, who finally gathered 12 years after the trio first met. Blake has previous form for extra-curricular collaborations, having formed Jonny with Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci’s Euros Child in 2010 for an album of blissful harmonies and psychedelic whimsy.

Into The Lime bathes in more sublime, warming Blake and Pernice lullabies in Sarasota, If You Only Knew Her and Out Of The Lime, while Teenage Fanclub’s early love of a rushing guitar thrill is rediscovered on Shouting Match.

The gorgeous cover of Sandy Denny’s By The Time It Gets Dark echoes The Byrds before the Velvet Underground and The Jesus And Mary Chain gate-crash the studio for the runt-of-the-litter droning closer, Lifelike Hair.
