With a bigger and better venue comes the opportunity to draw in bigger and better artists.
Launch night at Fibbers, and the Manc messiahs that are The Courteeners graced the newly built stage to christen the quarter of a million refurbished venue.
The sold-out-in-seconds show has had people speculating whether the band would play smaller venues again, after front man Liam Fray said they were ready to step it up a level as they didn’t want to play dingy clubs.
However, Fibbers has transformed vastly and looks nothing like it did earlier this year, now with suave decor and a big team of fresh-faced staff, but long forgotten is the issue of what could be considered unacceptable temperatures, with sweat literally dripping from the ceiling even before the night had started.
After waiting in a queue for two hours, that didn’t really go down that well, but as soon as The Courteeners made their eventual appearance, all focus was directly on them.
The four-piece took to the stage, with the crowd chanting like a bunch of football hooligans Danny Dyer would be proud of, and The Courteeners kicked things off with their hidden track Acrylic from debut album St Jude.
They played tracks from both St Jude and the newest of the collection, Falcon. Their effortlessly cool, cocky yet charming set was what Fibbers needed to get everyone excited about music in York again after the four months Fibbers has been absent.
