IN a coup for Pocklington Arts Centre, Raul Malo, founder and leader of The Mavericks, will play there on November 8 at 8pm.
Joined by Michael Guerra on accordion and bajo sexton, Malo will present An Intimate Evening With Raul Malo, in support of his EP of new material and Malo favourites, This Is Raul Malo, released by Fantasy/Decca on November 1.
The four-track EP will feature the new song Staying Here; a studio recording of his concert favourite Man Without Love, sung in Spanish; plus live versions of Moonlight Kiss, which was A-listed by BBC Radio 2 earlier this year, and Lucky One, the title track of his most recent album.
Staying Here will be a single edit from his next album, Sinners & Saints, whose release is scheduled for next January.
Lucky One, his 2009 album, was his first collection of original material in seven years and it saw him breaking free from his shackles. “I have been fighting my whole life against people who want to pigeonhole music,” he says. “We fought that in the Mavericks. I feel like I’ve got no restrictions anymore. I’m not really writing for any specific genre. I feel like I can do whatever I want.”
