GUITAR legend Duane Eddy will play the Grand Opera House, York, on Wednesday, October 13.
Tickets go on sale at 10am tomorrow and are available solely from the Cumberland Street theatre in person or on 0844 847 2322 or online at grandoperahouseyork.org.uk.
The American guitarist, now 72, is known for his “twangy” guitar sound, a description he coined himself to describe his distinctive brand of instrumental rock’n’roll.
The annals of rock history record that the sound was created after Eddy heard Bill Justis’s Raunchy, the song that The Beatles’ George Harrison first learned to play.
In collaboration with producer Lee Hazlewood, Eddy co-wrote a deluge of hits mixed with versions of standards, using the bass strings of his Gretsch guitar, recorded through an echo chamber.
First entering the Top 20 in 1958 with Rebel Rouser, New Yorker Eddy and his band The Rebels went on to record such hits as Peter Gunn Theme, Shazam!, Pepe, Theme From Dixie and Dance With The Guitar Man (unusually for him, a number with lyrics, sung by a girl group).
BBC Radio 2 disc jockey Johnnie Walker has used Eddy’s 1960 hit, Because They’re Young, as his theme music for more than 25 years.
Eddy returned to the singles chart in 1986 when artful ZTT act Art Of Noise teamed up with the king of twang for a version of Peter Gunn that made the number eight spot.
His October 13 show in York is co-promoted by The Leadmill and Mr H Presents, alias York promoter Tim Hornsby.
