Jane McDonald first and foremost is a very good singer. She is also gregarious, affable, attractive, and astute, but alas at times a little too much ITV.

Her show is precise, her band is very good, and her new guitar player is quietly exceptional. They allow Jane to give the big dramatic numbers the Shirley Bassey treatment, well almost, but when you see her on stage you are left in no doubt as to who inherited Danny La Rue’s wardrobe.

This girl makes bling the new grey, while her language is more colourful. She does not swear, but while gossiping about herself (the life blood of her celebrity) she is not afraid to lavish her adoring fans with double entendres, that admittedly go down well.

And at that point she would fake shock at the faux pas while you catch up.

Ms McDonald is something of a contradiction really as she stands there telling you she is just the girl next door – while looking like the Queen of Sheba.

She punctuates the songs with stand up, and you get confused as to whether you are watching an international singing superstar or Les Dawson’s character Ada as she adjusts her cleavage and chatters away.

But if she is to challenge Cheryl Cole to become the nation’s sweetheart she will need to have broader appeal beyond the limitations of dated clubland humour.

What is interesting about Jane McDonald is that she has the talent to pull it off... as Ada might say!
