It is said that success breeds success, and there can be little doubt that without her association to Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra Ruby Turner would not have filled the Theatre Royal at York – but she did, and how.
Ruby’s voice has a deep rich texture and range that she can resonate into many shades of emotion. The result is a wonderful mixture of soul, blues, and R&B numbers that thrilled and excited her audience throughout the cleverly paced set.
It was interesting to hear her perform without the backing of a big band, because this was always going to be different minus the punch of a big brass section. But she is touring with four highly accomplished musicians that made the night a joy, especially when they got to the really good stuff; you could have listened to them jazzing it up all night.
Her new album is called I’m Travelling On but what she really needs now to complete her journey is a massive hit to match her larger than life personality. All Aboard/This Train got her going in the right direction but you just feel that the best is yet to come.
Ruby Turner is a natural who is a delight to listen to. She is a performer who embraces you with her warm bubbly sense of humour and good natured enthusiasm.
This was a splendid performance and the standing ovation at the end of the show confirmed she has made many new friends in York.
If you had your picture taken with Ruby after the show and would like to share them with us we would be pleased to attach them to this story for others to enjoy. Simply email them to web.admin@yorkpress.co.uk
Thank you.
