TONIGHT'S specially convened band of bands at Pocklington Arts Centre will give an insight into Scottish traditional music and the spirit of a fiddle session.
In the wake of last month’s performance at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections event, SessionA9 are on the road for a short tour with a line-up of Charlie McKerron and David “Chimp” Robertson, of Capercaillie; Adam Sutherland, from Peatbog Faeries; Kevin Henderson, of Fiddlers Bid; Marc Clement, from Blazin’ Fiddles; and Gordon Gunn and Brian MacAlpine, of too many bands to mention.
In the spirit of trad music, the band came together through a session on the A9. Regularly bumping into each other at various stops on the road between Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands, they began playing sessions and gradually established the band.
Further music highlights at Pocklington this season include Gerry Cross The Mersey, An Evening With Gerry & The Pacemakers, on Thursday; 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominees Mawkin:Causley, February 24; the Lonnie Donegan Band, March 6; satirical cabaret trio Fascinating Aida, April 10; pianist Manny Vass’s A Grand Night Out, April 11, 7pm; and The Blockheads, April 16.
Further ahead, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra swing into town on May 12; The Fureys & Davey Arthur cross the Irish Sea on May 19; Appalachian hell-raisers Hayseed Dixie do their hillbilly AC/DC thing on May 21; Bellowhead lead singer Jon Boden leads The Remnant Kings in a night of epic “folkapocalyptica” on May 22; folk politicos Chumbawamba are full of attitude on May 29; and Nashville singer-songwriter Suzy Bogguss celebrates Wine, Women And Song on May 31.
Lau, twice winners of the best group prize in the BBC Folk Awards, play their innovative twist on traditional music on June 17; and Adrian Edmondson & The Bad Shepherds return to where they took their first steps in 2008 for a night of folked-up punk classics on July 1.
All shows start at 8pm unless stated. Box office: 01759 301547 or www.pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk
