INEVITABLY a movie will be made about Carla Bruni one day. The embodiment of Euro glamour, sophistication and power, the former First Lady of France has a story to rival that of Princess Diana.

Yet, lest we forget, before marrying Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, Bruni was already a massive star in France. Indeed, Bruni’s debut album Quelqu’un m’a dit, not only spent 34 weeks in the French top ten, but also did the unthinkable by achieving cross-over success in the UK and America.

Subsequent albums No Promises and Little French Songs often included a high quota of English language material. Mostly, however, those in the know prefer Carla’s chansons. Surprising, then, that the new David Foster-produced set consists of extremely well-known pop and rock standards, albeit given a Gallic flavour.

The Stones’ Miss You, Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence and AC/DC’s Highway To Hell sit beside standards Moon River, The Winner Takes It All, Crazy, featuring the song’s composer Willy Nelson, and without a flicker of irony, Stand By Your Man.
