A THROWBACK album in a very good way. Kami Thompson and husband James Walbourne set people talking with their 2014 debut.

Their sound is clearly influenced by Kami’s parents, Richard and Linda Thompson, whose set of mid-Seventies albums are held in high esteem.

Opener The Cally could be straight from the Richard Thompson songbook. This gives a clear pointer for what's to come, which is solidly constructed and built to last. Thompson sings well, and their voices gel to fine effect.

Walbourne ensures the material has a contemporary as well as traditional flavour, and the most memorable is Brick And Mortar, lamenting the human cost of the London property bubble.

He first came to light playing guitar with the great singer-songwriter Peter Bruntnell and this song is in a similar style to the Devonian’s more recent work.

Leaving The Land deals with the cleansing of social housing but smartly keeps the details wrapped in London fog. On occasion Walbourne even lets loose with his trademark guitar sound, always in service of the song.
