GEORDIE singer Joe McElderry returns to York on Wednesday with another top five album under his belt.

He brings his Saturday Night At The Movies tour to the Grand Opera House in the wake of this summer's chart success of his record of the same name.

"Last time I did a concert in York, it was the stripped-back, acoustic Evolution show in 2015; this one will be with my band, more of a full-scale concert show," says Joe, from Westoe, South Shields, who found fame when winning the 2009 series of The X Factor.

He will be joined on stage by three special guests, Sam Callahan, from The X Factor, and Keith Jack and Ben James-Ellis, from the Any Dream Will Do talent show, who, like Joe, have featured in Bill Kenwright’s production of Joseph And The Technicolor Dreamcoat.

"I did the tour from January to June last year [including the Grand Opera House in April 2016], then did some solo shows, and started Joseph again in January till mid-June, and then began rehearsals for this tour in London," says Joe.

"I've been working with Ben in Joseph – he's playing Pharaoh – and Keith and I did a project in Scotland, just for one night, a musicals and movies show at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh."

Joe features two songs from Joseph – Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door – on his Saturday Night At The Movies album. "It felt the right thing to do after I've had such an amazing experience doing the show. I knew I would enjoy it but I didn't realise it just as much as I have," he says.

"You start off being a bit nervous for a few nights, thinking 'is it something that people will want to come to see?', but after two weeks I was thinking, 'I'm really enjoying it'."

Joe McElderry: "When a musician of Graham Gouldman's stature wants to work with you, it's such an honour"

Alongside songs from the movies, the new album features the new song Gloria, first issued as a single for Mothering Sunday. Penned by 10cc's Graham Gouldman, it was offered to Joe by Joseph impresario Bill Kenwright with Mothering Sunday in mind, and Joe subsequently decided it should be included on the album too.

"I recorded it with Graham there in the studio, which was lovely. Everything was set up in the studio as I was busy with Joseph, so it was a quick turnaround, with Graham overseeing everything – and when a musician of Graham's stature wants to work with you, it's such an honour."

Choosing songs for the album was "a lot easier than starting from scratch, writing a record". "Because of the nature of the album, because the songs were huge established hits, we thought, 'let's experiment with these hits and see how they work out' and most of them worked straightaway," says Joe.

"I always like to have new experiences," says Joe McElderry

"Most of the songs off the album will be included in the live show as we're going out on tour to celebrate the album release, but I'm always one to change things around to find what suits audiences best."

Joe is looking forward to performing to a York audience once more. "They're always wonderful; they've always been very supportive, wanting to sing along, join in, so I keep coming back," he says. "I've always played the Barbican with my solo shows, but I played the Opera House in Joseph, and it'll be nice to bring the new solo show there as I always like to have new experiences."

What might be coming next for 26-year-old Joe? "We're talking about a lot of things at the moment; we're kind of focusing on the album and tour now, but if an opportunity comes along, I'll be happy to do it," he says. "Let's see what comes up!"
