LAUNCHING her ninth studio album, Alison Moyet joined the stellar company of Marc Almond, Tom Robinson, Bright Light Bright Light and Will Young at last week’s I Feel Love Gala at Hull City Hall, and recently joined a-ha on the island of Giske off the Norwegian Atlantic coast for a yet-to-be screened television special.

Alison’s imminent World Tour fortuitously includes the York Barbican, which will thrill loyal fans. Those hoping to attend should certainly make acquaintance with Moyet’s latest work. However, Other is hardly a comfortable listen.

A potpourri of electronic torch ballads and dark soundscapes, Moyet’s collaboration with co-writer and producer Guy Skipworth demands focused listening. The more accessible Reassuring Pinches and the Yazooish Happy Giddy will probably become fan favourites, but the spoken-work poetry of 10th April or the sirenesque Rarest Birds should not be skipped.

Alison Moyet plays York Barbican on November 19. Box office: 0844 854 2757 or at yorkbarbican.co.uk
