THE theme of Copmanthorpe Carnival Day, in Copmathorpe, near York, on Saturday will be Superheroes. Youngsters who come in costume will receive a lollipop and a treasure hunt with clues will take place around the carnival site, with the winning entry being drawn at 4pm.

To tie in with the theme, the Frei Compagnie, the Towton Battlefield Society, will present Medieval Superheroes: How They Did It In The Old Days, with real cannons.

Other attractions this year will include live music and dance on the main stage; a fairground; a climbing wall; a Pimm's tent and two new additions, a free silent disco and free children's games in the carnival arena.

The arena timetable will open with the Panda Playgroup's obstacle course at 12.30pm; the Frei Compagnie will demonstration battle skills, with visitors joining in, at 1.30pm and 3pm; children's races will be run from 2pm, with free entry, and Thomas Clubbercise will be the finale at 3.30pm.

Further carnival attractions will be a free children’s sword drill; a farmers' market; giant inflatables; a bungee trampoline; electric go-karts; donkey rides; street food stalls; the Bat the Rat game; a skittle alley; china smashing and a coconut shy.

Among the bands will be Lion Papers; Minster Conspiracy; Leather’o; Adam Dawson; Kitsch and Sister Madly, featuring two leading York musical theatre actresses,Marie-Lousie Surgenor and Joanne Theaker.

Entry to the carnival for adults is by programme. If bought online at copmanthorpecarnival.org.uk/buy-tickets, the price is £6, including postage and packing; alternatively, programmes are available from the Post Office, Co-op, Mace, Copmanthorpe Library, Royal Oak and the Recreation Centre's Sports & Social Club or from door-to-door sellers in Copmanthorpe for £5. Admission for accompanied children aged under 14 is free.

The carnival opens at midday.
