THE Cory Band, the number one ranked brass band in the world, will head from the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, on July 15 to perform in tandem with York's own Shepherd Group Brass Band.

The 7.30pm joint concert at Manor CE Academy, Nether Poppleton, York. has been organised by the two bands' musical directors, Philip Harper and Richard Wilton. "This a major coup, not just for the Shepherd Group Band, but for the city of York itself," says Wilton. "What the Cory Band has achieved over the last few years to earn the title of the best brass band in the world is phenomenal.

"Their playing ability over the many styles of music they perform has to be heard to be believed. You will not be disappointed if you come to next month's concert.”

Looking ahead, Wilton is to conduct the Shepherd Group Band in the national first section finals in September, earned by winning the North of England title at Durham in March.

Meanwhile, all five bands of the Shepherd Group Brass Band family will be performing in Parliament Street, York, on July 1 between 10.30am and 4pm. Taking part will be the Shepherd Brass Roots, Academy Band, Youth Band, Concert Brass Band and the senior Shepherd Group Band. In addition, band members will host have-a-go sessions throughout the day for anyone who "ever fancied trying to play a brass instrument".

Tickets for July 15 cost £10 on 01904 655076 or 07941 546564.
