CANADIAN singer-songwriter Christina Martin plays The Basement, City Screen, York, on June 25, sharing the bill with Annie Keating and Dan Webster.

Nods to her idols Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty inform Martin's heartfelt music that has earned her a loyal following in rural Nova Scotia and elsewhere.

She will be in York on the second night of a ten-date tour that follows the June 6 release of Lungs Are Burning, a single that addresses what she alleges is a rising drug problem in Canada Billed as a "fervent anthem for those who are lost and longing, Lungs Are Burning is the first song to be lifted from Martin's forthcoming album, made with husband and musical partner Dale Murray for the Come Undone Records/Tonetoaster label.

"The song is a modest attempt to bring light to the heavy topic of addiction," says Martin. "It reflects my own personal sense of loss, longing and a deep void and the ache I feel from losing my brother and friends to addiction and mental illness."

Tickets cost £6 at the basementyork.co/uk or £8 on the door from 8pm.
