VELMA Celli, the internationally renowned drag diva creation of York-born singer and actor Ian Stroughair, returns to The Basement, at City Screen, York, tonight (June 10) for his monthly cabaret show, this time with West End performer Zie Curlett as the special guest.

"It's York Pride today, so this is the perfect evening out we think," says Stroughair, who has appeared in such musicals as Chicago, Cats, Fame and Rent.

The Velma Celli Show is "a drag show like no other" with lip-synching a definite no-no: “We have the wigs, the fast-costume changes and some friendly humour during our show, but all the songs our audience hears are performed live," says Ian. "No lip synching, just fabulous powerhouse vocals in an intimate setting, many performed with live accompaniment. If you like great music and want to go home in a great mood at the end of the evening, this is the show for you.”

Guest Zoe Curlett is no stranger to the limelight, having performed in the West End in Cats and The Phantom Of The Opera and as one of the "lovely ladies" in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables. "Belting out solo numbers during the show, as well as duetting with Velma, Zoe will add to the sequinned razzle-dazzle of the cabaret evening with style, wit and a voice you won’t forget," says Ian.

Tickets for tonight's 8pm show cost £15 at picturehouses.com/cinema/York_Picturehouse/film/the-velma-celli-show or on the door from 7.30pm; tickets for July 15 have gone on sale too.
