YOLANDA Brown will be the first double MOBO Award winner to play Selby Town Hall when the London jazz saxophonist arrives in North Yorkshire on Spring Bank Holiday Monday with her band to present Reggae Love Songs, her homage to reggae greats.

"I’m made up to have brought this show to Selby; YolanDa is genuinely amazing," says Chris Jones, Selby Town Council's arts officer. "She's the UK's premier female saxophonist; she's won all manner of jazz awards and collaborated with some of the biggest names in UK music. We even had to move this show from its original date when she went on a second massive national tour as special guest to Billy Ocean."

Born and raised in East London, YolanDa has been a perpetual high achiever. After attaining a first in operations management and two masters degrees, and with a PhD on hold, a high-flying business career beckoned but music was always her first love. Several years of hard gigging led to her winning the Best Jazz MOBO Award in 2008 and repeating the feat in 2009, and YolanDa has since won the Best Jazz Act at the Urban Music Awards and Best Performer at the Marlborough Jazz Festival, while her 2012 debut album, April Showers May Flowers, peaked at number one on the iTunes and Amazon jazz charts.

YolanDa has toured with The Temptations, Errol Brown, Courtney Pine and Diana Krall, collaborated with Mica Paris and Soweto Kinch and played in Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, performing across the world.

Her Reggae Love Songs show has been playing major concert halls across the country over the past 12 months, paying tribute to the likes of Bob Marley, John Holt and Dennis Brown.

“YolanDa is a real force of nature” says Chris. “She's as good a saxophonist as you are ever likely to hear and her Reggae Love Songs show has received rave reviews across the board. It’s a real honour to host an artist of YolanDa’s calibre at Selby Town Hall, which is one of the smallest venues she has visited on her year-long tour.

"Whether you are a reggae fan, a jazz fan, a saxophone fan or just a fan of great music played incredibly well, this is definitely a show you need to check out.”

Tickets for Monday's 8pm concert cost £17 on 01757 708449 or at selbytownhall.co.uk or £19 on the door from 7.30pm.
