AFTER The Meat Loaf Story, Vampires Rock, Vampires Rock Ghost Train and Bat Symphony, Steve Steinman has created another retro rock extravaganza, Iconic: The Show.

"We're kind of talking the most iconic songs from the most iconic movies, with a movie-based story set in an old cinema," says the Manchester-born singer and impresario, who first caught the eye as Meat Loaf's doppelganger on Stars In Their Eyes more than 20 years ago.

"There are so many incredible songs in movies and probably some of them are even more iconic than the movies," adds Steinman, who will be joined by a cast of singers and dancers and a formidable band at Hull City Hall tonight and the Grand Opera House, York, on May 19.

Killer moment: Kill Bill in Iconic: The Show

Iconic: The Show is set in a future where movie theatres have all but disappeared and a single magical cinema still stands with one lonely occupant, an usher called Benson (portrayed by John Evans). His challenge is to entice viewers to attend the final screening of the night, when a group of performers will deliver a midnight medley of iconic soundtracks, reawakening musical memories of the most recognisable songs of all time.

Here comes Steinman, Evans, Penny Johns, Hayley Russell, Victoria Jenkins and co to perform songs from Kill Bill, Batman, Pulp Fiction, Purple Rain, A Hard Day's Night, Jailhouse Rock, The Graduate, James Bond and Mad Max movies, with Queen, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones and Prince among the songwriters.

"It's not a musical but more a concert with great songs, though there's a 'silly' storyline where each song will take you to the next line in the story, which is kind of a unique thing that I do with my shows. It worked for Vampire Rock and it seems to be working for this show," says Steinman, whose company will be performing on a set designed in the red velvet style of an old British cinema, but kitted out with a "great LED video screen for crystal-clear images to accompany the songs".

The Usherette in Iconic: The Show

"Being a new show, there are still things we're trying out, changing it all the time, so it's evolving, like when we brought in three new songs a couple of weeks ago. It'll really blow you away by next year!!"
