SHARLEEN Spiteri invites us to join her in her "disco kitchen" for Texas's latest album, which detours from rock to pop with mixed success.

The opener, Let's Work It Out, tells us that Spiteri and co have spun Daft Punk's global seller Random Access Memories a few times (but let's face it, who hasn't?). The influence of Get Lucky is apparent elsewhere, notably on Can't Control and Midnight, which is their best pop song on the record.

Elsewhere, Spiteri sounds like Chrissie Hynde on Won't Let You Down, which is no bad thing as it turns out. There is a half-hearted attempt to return to their rock roots on Tell That Girl, but it never really shifts out of second gear.

After three decades together and nine albums, fans will no doubt be pleased to see Texas back in the studio. They will be touring too, with a date at York Barbican on September 21. Looks like there will be (disco) dancing in the aisles.
