AIR guitars should be at the ready in York this Easter for York Stage Musicals' return to the Grand Opera House in Rock Of Ages After such shows as Dolly Parton's 9 To 5, Ghost The Musical, Hairspray and Sister Act, York Stage take on the high notes in Chris D'Arienzo's rock jukebox musical with arrangements and orchestrations by Ethan Popp from April 7 to 15.

At the tail end of 1980s' Hollywood, the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip's last legendary venues, the Bourbon Room, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily-clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amid the madness, aspiring rock star and resident loo cleaner Drew longs to be the next big thing and aches for the affection of small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes.

However, the rock'n'roll fairytale could soon be at an end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist shopping mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the Strip – and themselves – before it is too late? Only the music of rock gods Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi and Whitesnake holds the answer.

Artistic director Nik Briggs says of the show: “Rock Of Ages is so much more than a musical, it's a mini rock concert. The company have already taken the vocally demanding challenge of these classic songs head on and are making the most phenomenal sound”

Leading the cast will be Lauren Sheriston, who played Molly Jensen in Ghost The Musical last February, regular York leading man Conor Mellor and York blues singer Jess Gardham, who was such a delight as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost. BBC Radio York afternoon show presenter Adam Tomlinson, often to be found in assorted York pits on musical director duties, switches to the stage this time to play German property developer Hertz Klienmann.

"Get ready to back-comb your hair, dig out that ra-ra skirt and prepare to rock the evening away at this hilarious Eighties-themed musical that features such legendary rock songs as We Built This City, The Final Countdown, Here I Go Again, I Want To Know What Love Is and Don't Stop Believing," says Nik, who is joined in the production team by choreographer Jessica Hardcastle and musical director Stephen Hackshaw.

Tickets for the 7.30pm evening shows and 2.30pm Saturday matinees are on sale at £11.90 to £31.40 on 0844 871 3024 or at atgtickets.com/york
